Allentown, Pa. (WZMQ) – The PPL Center in Allentown Pennsylvania might be 1000 miles away from Houghton but Michigan Tech’s game vs Penn State there felt like it was at home for the Huskies.
The Tech fans were there and they were loud. The journey to get to the game though wasn’t an easy one for those fans.
A 20 hour bus ride separated Mitch’s Misfits, Michigan Tech’s student fan group, and the MTU pep band from the NCAA regional tournament in Allentown. But they weren’t gonna let that stop them from cheering on their team.
“It’s a lot of bonding,” said one student about the bus ride.
The trip was possible thanks to the generosity of alumni. Michigan Tech alumni not only paid for the buses that carried the students, but also worked with the school to pay for the hotel they will stay in and for the tickets that got them into the game.
“That’s what makes us different, we’re a community unlike any other school. It connects the college and alumni together,” said a Michigan Tech alumni that made the trip from Lansing to watch the game.
Students on the trip say their inspired by the kindness that gave them the chance to watch there favorite hockey team
“It makes me look forward to when I’m older and making more money. I think I’ll do the same thing and give back,” remarked a Michigan Tech Junior who made the 20 hour trip to see the Huskies play.
The trip was completely free (other than food) to the over 90 students and band members who made the trip.
