IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Iron Mountain wrestling team’s senior co-captain, Shawn McGuire, was brought back to the U.P. with his team, a state title, and a police escort on Sunday evening. The cheers and chants have paid off with some big trophies, and even bigger memories. The humble champion is a true team player.
“I mean, I’m really proud of what our team did, with how many kids that we have. Our seven wrestlers, I think they did so amazing, and it wasn’t just me, I don’t want the focus to just be on me, but other captains, senior Evan Haferkorn, and Fulton Stroud, Shayna Ruska, Alex Wilson and Daniel Manier. I’m really excited for what Iron Mountain has coming for them next year,” commented McGuire.
The high school senior says that he has plans to wrestle in college. He is still open to checking out other schools, and wants to give college recruitment teams a chance to reach out. However, the senior mountaineer does have a top five, among his choices. His top five choice colleges as of right now are Davenport University, Sienna Heights, Rochester, Lakeland, and Cornerstone University.
McGuire said that he struggled with two close matches in the beginning of the meet. By the second day on the mat he says he went out and got it done.
“I feel that you’ve always got to have a positive attitude, and always know and be confident in yourself that you guys can win. That is always running through the back of my head. Anybody can beat anybody. Anything can happen, but if you attack, and you score, and you set the pace right away, you’re set to win,” McGuire commented about his success in the MHSAA Division 4 championship.
Having a police escort was an exciting moment for the mountaineer wrestler, and he says there is a first for everything. “It was a good experience,” he said. McGuire added that he felt like the whole U.P. was proud to bring back the champion title.
Other mountaineer medalists from the motor city meet at Detroit’s Ford Field were Fulton Stroud, who took 2nd in his class, Tyler Winch who took 4th in his class, Shayna Hruska who took 7th in her class, and senior Evan Haferkorn who took 2nd in his class.
