ONTONAGAN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In Greenland township, a long-used well is being ordered to shut down. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy ordered the DNR to shut down the roadside water access site on the Bill Nichols trail. The specific health concern with this well is the actual piping that holds it together.
“There are no easy ways to maintain it and also to find out where the source is without pipes collapsing or other issues. But we’ve been working with the local health department and of course EGLE and state legislatures to try to do what we can here to help out the folks that actually prize that as a drinking source.”
The deadline for this closing is now by February 24th with EGLE also giving the DNR an opening for approving another 120-day extension. They have received old maps of the area that they hope to use to find out more about the source
