MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – September 6 is known as 906 Day for residents of the Upper Peninsula. It’s the day Yoopers celebrate everything they love about the U.P.
The name comes from the area code for the U.P., spanning all the way from the west corner of Gogebic County, up to the tip of the Keweenaw in Copper Harbor, and as far east as Drummond Island.
The U.P. is home to some of the snowiest places in the country, but it’s also known for it’s beautiful summers.
The U.P.’s unofficial ambassador, Bugsy Sailor, who also owns the U.P. Supply Company in downtown Marquette, started the “holiday” back in 2012 as a way to promote his business. He said it quickly turned into a social media campaign that was enjoyed by all, and now, even other businesses have joined in on the fun.
“It’s a day where I encourage people to buy a pasty, go for a swim in the lake, chop some wood, fire up the sauna, any of those classic U.P. activities,” said Sailor.
People are encouraged to post their favorite U.P. pictures on social media and use the hashtag #906day for everyone to enjoy.
