MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Four swimmers, who became stranded on Picnic Rocks, are back on shore and are ok.
WZMQ 19’s reporters spoke with the four swimmers after they were returned to shore. The four females, who are all students at Northern Michigan University, say they were paddleboarding when they realized they were being pulled out into the lake.
The group decided it was better to hop off the paddleboards onto the “M” island and signaled to their friends on shore for help.
The group says they were on the island for about an hour.
Our reporters on the scene say the Marquette Fire Department, Marquette City Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, the DNR, and Marquette beach lifeguards were all assisting in the rescue.

A number of agencies in Marquette are working to rescue some swimmers stranded on Marquette’s Picnic Rocks island.
The situation began around 3:15 p.m. Friday.
Our reporter on the scene says it appears a jet ski is transferring people back to shore.
No official word on the number of people involved, but scanner traffic indicates it could be four people who became stranded on the “M” island.
No word on injuries at this point.
