ELY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – A 17-year-old girl is dead after a crash that led to a car fire in the early morning hours of Sunday.
Michigan State Police says it happened on County Road 482 near County Road CM around 12:04 a.m. Sunday. When troopers arrived, they found the vehicle about 30 yards off the roadway fully engulfed in flames. MSP says the vehicle was found lying on its right side and appeared to have gone through numerous large trees before coming to a rest.
Troopers immediately began attempting to extinguish the fire and help the girl. She was the lone occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation. The victim’s name has not been released.
MSP was assisted by Ishpeming Township Fire, UPHS – Bell, Rescue 131, and Marquette City Police.
NICE Community School District posted to Facebook Sunday afternoon that the girl was a student at Westwood High School. The district will have a counseling center Monday at Westwood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for anyone who needs it.
