WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate is looking to pass a funding package after hitting a roadblock late Thursday night but there still might be a partial government shutdown.
After Senate Democrats and the White House reached a deal to continue negotiations on reforms for ICE, one Senate Republican threatened to block the funding bills unless they could vote on cracking down on sanctuary cities. However, it now looks like the Senator is backing down on his threat on blocking the Senate from advancing the funding bills.
The deal Senators will vote on separates funding for DHS from the rest of the funding package. Senators said they will move forward with a two-week continuing resolution for DHS so that negotiations can continue. The proposal still needs to be approved by the House, but they are scheduled to come back to the Hill next week. So, there could be a small shutdown over the weekend.
