Republicans Look to Build Support for Mayorkas Impeachment Trial in Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In February, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas became the second cabinet official to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

The Republican majority House narrowly passed the articles of impeachment and is expected to deliver them to the Senate early next week.

“Make no mistake about it, a vote to block the impeachment trial of Secretary Mayorkas is a vote to keep our borders open,” said Senator Roger Marshall (R- KS).

Republicans are waiting to send two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas to the Senate as they seek more time to make the public argument for a full trial.

The articles accuse Mayorkas of a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and a “breach of public trust.”

“This is aiding and abetting Mexican criminal cartels, human and drug traffickers that have become decabillionaires because of these open border policies,” said Senator Ted Cruz (R- TX).

Democrats say impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements. Republicans say it’s about much more than that.

“This invasion is not an accident. It’s not that they’re bad at the job. Sadly, it’s that Alejandro Mayorkas is very good at the job he’s trying to do, and the job he is trying to do is maximize the number of illegal immigrants in America,” said Sen. Cruz. “This is absolutely deliberate, and this is flouting the law.”

Republicans are pushing for a full trial as early as next week. Senate Democrats say it is very, very unlikely.

“I don’t think there’ll be a trial,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D- NY), who believes the impeachment is nothing more than a political stunt.

“It’s an absurd impeachment that has not based in fact, it’s not appropriate. They’re impeaching him because they don’t agree with President Biden’s policy,” said Sen. Gillibrand.

Democrats hold the majority in the Senate and are expected to quickly dismiss the articles brought forth by House Republicans.

“I think the Senate will dispatch it quickly, within hours,” said Gillibrand.
