WASHINGTON, D.C. — With just four days until Election Day, the fight for control of the Senate is coming down to the wire.
From Alaska to Texas, new polls show competitive races, millions in campaign spending and candidates making their final pitch to voters.
The final countdown is on, with several high-stakes Senate battles and little room for error.
In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola is now drawing scrutiny over allegations that she was aware of a plot to recruit a Democratic candidate earlier this year with the same name as incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. Critics call it a “dirty political ploy” to stir confusion with Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system in a race that is neck and neck.
The Peltola campaign denies any involvement in the alleged scheme. A Justice Department lawsuit could also complicate election certification.
“The Alaska situation is terrible,” said President Donald Trump. “It was a scheme. It was election fraud, total election fraud.”
In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson holds a four-point edge over Republican Susan Collins in a recent CNN poll. Both candidates are facing high unfavorability ratings, as the race remains tight.
Also this week, a Trump-backed super PAC is ramping up last-minute Senate ad spending, buying $1.5 million in Kansas and another $750,000 in South Carolina, according to AdImpact.
And in deep-red Texas, Democrat James Talarico is making a push against Republican Ken Paxton to become the first Democrat elected statewide in three decades.
“Do you want a U.S. senator that runs a vegan campaign and hates meat? I don’t either,” said Paxton during a recent rally.
“In the final days of this election, they are coming at us with everything they’ve got,” said Talarico.
Recent polling averages have Talarico ahead 49 to 47%.
In Michigan, Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin is stumping for Abdul El-Sayed, who leads Republican Mike Rogers in several recent polls, some by as high as seven points.
“You always love to see if they’re going to run like we’re ten points down,” El-Sayed said.
