UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will temporarily close nearly a dozen facilities in Marquette and Baraga counties, primarily for road and parking area improvements, beginning next week.

“We have begun piling gravel and other construction materials at work sites, with these valuable projects set to begin in the coming days,” said Doug Rich, DNR parks and recreation division western Upper Peninsula district supervisor. “We ask that motorists and other visitors to these locations be cautious of heavy equipment operating in the area.”

The projects are being funded with $125,000 in DNR state parks capital infrastructure and $30,000 in waterways program funds. In addition, playground construction funding at Baraga State Park was derived from DNR parks capital outlay funds, a grant from the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and a private donor.

The work will be completed, through a great collaborative partnership with the DNR, by the Michigan Army National Guard 107th Engineer Battalion as part of its Innovative Readiness Training.
