Marquette hockey team headed to National Championship

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette American Legion Post 44 won the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association state championship Sunday at Marquette’s Lakeview Arena. 

Post 44 held off the Kalamazoo K-Wings 3-2 in the title game. 

Skyler Blackburn and Evan Mattila scored goals to give the host team a 2-1 lead, but it was a short-handed goal by Joey Provost in the third that allowed Marquette to take a 3-1 advantage, and coach Jon Nebel’s squad was able to skate away with the championship banner. 

In the semi-final Sunday morning, Post 44 eliminated Kensington Valley 5-1. 

Post 44 advances to the national tournament, which will take place in Amherst, New York starting April 3.
