MSP warns of ‘DMV’ scam texts

UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan State Police (MSP) officials are alerting citizens of scam text messages.

According to MSP, citizens receive a text message from someone claiming to be from the State of Michigan DMV. The message threatens legal action and driver’s license suspension for failure to make a payment. The message includes a link to pay the supposed fees.

The text message is a scam. Michigan does not have a DMV, and the Michigan Department of State/Secretary of State never asks citizens to send money or personal information via text.

MSP warns citizens who receive such a text not to click on the links, not to provide any additional information, and to delete the text.
