Teenager killed in Calumet Township residential fire

CALUMET TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Calumet Township teen was killed in a house fire over the weekend.

On Saturday, May 24, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a structure fire on Wolverine Street. The building contained two apartments on separate floors.

When deputies arrived, two of the residents were outside the house. It was determined that another resident was still inside on the second level. The rear exterior entrance used to access the second floor was fully engulfed in flames.

A deputy and Laurium Village officer entered the lower level in an attempt to locate the resident, but they were unable to access the second floor from inside. They had to vacate the residence shortly after entering due to heavy smoke.

Once the fire was contained, 15-year-old Xavier Sever was found dead on the second floor. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Calumet Township Fire Department, Laurium PD, the Michigan State Police Calumet Post, the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall, Mercy Ambulance, and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
