DTE finds no danger after Escanaba Meijer evacuates due to gas smell

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – It was determined that there was no danger to those inside the Escanaba Meijer on Tuesday night following an evacuation.

Around 10:00 p.m., those inside the store reported a strong gas smell. A store team lead told WZMQ 19 that he quickly evacuated all customers and employees from the building.

Escanaba Public Safety and DTE Energy responded to the scene. According to the team lead, DTE found that the smell posed no threat. However, the Meijer employee said responders were unsure of what caused the smell.

Around 11:40 p.m., employees and customers were allowed back into the store.
