Shiver-Me-Timberstones Race: Winter Grit and U.P. spirit shine in Iron Mountain showdown

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The final race results for the brand-new Shiver-me-Timberstones Fat Tire Bike and Snowshoe race are in from U.P. Sport and Spoke, the center of the Mountain biking scene located in the heart of downtown Iron Mountain. U.P. Sport and Spoke solely sponsored the new event, and the shop’s owner, Michael Halley says he created the event to benefit the local community. Halley wants to highlight the collaborative efforts of the Iron Hills Cycling team, the Dickinson Trail Network, and Pine Mountain Ski and Golf Resort for all their dedication and diligence initiating the event. The competition was held at the new, and highly-anticipated mountain bike racecourse located on the Timberstone cart path at the Pine Mountain Ski and Golf Resort. 

The 5.5-mile, one lap race top five female competitors are:

Top 5.5 mile course speed: Emily Broeders, age 14 with an exceptional time of 57:13 that made this young competitor the fastest 5.5-miler overall, regardless of gender category. 

Kate GIlmet, age 32 with a time of 1:19:25

Kara Elder, age 43 with a time of 1:24:06

Maija Veihl, age 35 with a 1:25:13 time

Katy Pollard, age 42 had a 1:26:20 time

The top 6 males for the 5.5 mile, one lap race are:

Tony Pericolosi age 35 with a 58:57

Robert Bogaudo, age 54 with a 1:01:22 time

Derek Warren age 36 clocked in at 1:02:43

Matthew Moore, age 40 had a time of 1:04:01

Ken Coombe age 37, time 1:20:34 

Andrew Fisher, age 51, time of 1:22:58

The 11-mile TWO lap race had 9 top finishers:

36 year-old Quinnesec local Steve Viehl sealed the victory with a 1:39:30 time

Matt Fisher, age 36 had a time of 1:40:30

Matt Yamry, age 40 with a 1:51:15 time

Grant Miedema, age 29 with a time of 1:58:16 

Alex Sundstrom, age 33 with a 2:06:09 time

Merlin Calkins, age 63 with a 2:24:04 time

Francis Broeders, age 49 with a 2:34:17 time

Scott Sean, age 54 with a time of 2:48:34 

DJ Bianchi, age 39 with a 3:06:30 on the time clock.

And, finally, the snowshoe race had 7 competitors. 

David Lindholm, age 79 finished the snowshoe course impressively, with a time of 1:01:22.

Dana Condray, age 55 with a 1:00:29 time

Katie Mendina, age 35 1:05:47 time

Jamie Warren, age 35 with a 1:05:47 time

The bike shop is open Tuesday- Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST, and Saturdays 9 a.m.-2 p.m. CST.
